Match recap

The Washington Nationals out-hit the Los Angeles Angels 13-4 but needed a four-run eighth inning to erase a 5-2 deficit and steal a 6-5 walk-off win. Despite striking out 13 times and collecting no home runs, Washington's relentless contact offense and a costly LAA bullpen meltdown flipped the game.

Grayson Rodriguez cruised through 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out four, and the Angels built a 5-2 lead on solo homers from Zach Neto and Moisés Ballesteros plus patient at-bats that drew six walks. But the LAA bullpen unraveled in the eighth: Luke Murphy surrendered four runs on four hits and a walk in just one inning. Yohandy Morales (2-for-4, 2 R, RBI), Jacob Young (1-for-4, RBI, SB), and Daylen Lile (2-for-4, RBI) sparked the rally, and Jorbit Vivas delivered a go-ahead sacrifice fly. Jake Irvin absorbed the damage over five innings (3 ER, 2 H, 4 BB, 6 K) but the WSH pen — Tolman, Sinclair, and ultimately Cornelio — held LAA scoreless over the final four frames.

Key factors

  • Washington's 13-hit attack overwhelmed Los Angeles' 4-hit output; the Nats batted .361 as a team despite striking out 13 times.
  • Power disparity: LAA hit 2 HR (Neto, Ballesteros) to WSH's 0, but the Nationals' singles-based rally in the 8th proved more decisive.

The Analyst's verdict

The Nationals showed resilience by refusing to strike out their way out of a game they trailed for most of the night. The Angels, however, exposed a bullpen that cannot hold leads when the starter exits; that unit will be a liability in close games going forward.
