Russia 2–0 Iran: match recap

Match recap

Russia edged Iran 2-0 in a friendly that saw few clear chances but was decided by discipline and home advantage. Despite even shot volume and possession, Iran's defensive lapses proved costly.

The match was a cagey affair with both sides struggling to create quality opportunities. Russia capitalized on a set piece in the first half to take the lead, then added a second after the break following a rare Iran error in possession. Iran pushed for a response but lacked the incisive passing to break down a compact Russian defense.

Key factors

• Russia's set-piece execution produced the opening goal from a corner routine that caught Iran flat-footed.
• Iran's unforced turnovers in midfield directly led to the second goal, highlighting a lack of composure under pressure.
• Home advantage and defensive organization allowed Russia to absorb second-half pressure without conceding a shot on target.

The Analyst's verdict

Iran's lack of cutting edge in the final third remains a concern as they build toward competitive fixtures. Russia's efficiency on limited opportunities suggests a team capable of grinding out results, though they will face tougher tests against sides that hold possession.
