Match recap

Arizona edged Houston 3-2 behind Nolan Arenado's two-run homer and six strong innings from Eduardo Rodriguez. The Diamondbacks out-hit the Astros 9-7 but stranded 14 runners, while Houston's only run off Rodriguez came on a solo shot from Yordan Alvarez.

Arenado broke a scoreless tie in the fourth with a two-run blast off Peter Lambert, scoring Ketel Marte, who had singled. Corbin Carroll singled and later scored on a James McCann sacrifice fly in the fifth to make it 3-0. Yordan Alvarez answered with a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth, and a LaMonte Wade Jr. pinch-hit single in the eighth pulled Houston within one, but the Astros left 15 men on base and couldn't deliver the tying hit. Rodriguez allowed just three hits over six innings with six strikeouts, while Lambert took the loss despite yielding only one walk over seven frames.

Key factors

  • Houston's poor contact with runners in scoring position—leaving 15 LOB—undermined their plate-discipline advantage (+2 walks) and home-field edge.
  • Eduardo Rodriguez outdueled Peter Lambert by limiting hard contact, despite Lambert's solid line (7 IP, 6 K, 3 ER) and superior command.

The Analyst's verdict

Arizona's ability to generate contact and capitalize on early scoring chances outweighed Houston's superior plate discipline and home-field advantage. Both starting pitchers are trending upward, with Rodriguez building on a solid season and Lambert showing he can limit walks even when facing deep counts.
