How to understand a sports analysis

A calm framework for separating observations, context and conclusions.

A useful analysis starts with evidence: score progression, efficiency, possession quality, availability and player contribution. It then explains how those signals connect. A list of numbers is not yet an analysis.

Read in layers. First identify what happened. Next look for the mechanisms behind it, such as pace, rebounding or shot quality. Finally check which claims are strongly supported and which data is unavailable.

Context matters more than a dramatic headline. Venue, schedule and lineup changes can alter interpretation, but missing information should remain unavailable rather than being guessed.
